Graphic Design

Graphic Design is a hands-on career program that combines art with design. Students apply what they learn by working on real projects. To be prepared, focus on art, math, and technology classes. Develop your communication skills, and do well in all academic classes. Admission into college programs is competitive. To increase your chances, work toward Academic and Technical Honors Diplomas.

A Typical Student in Graphic Design:

The typical student is creative and enjoys hands-on projects. Students who enroll in Graphic Design are comfortable using a computer and are proficient navigating a PC or Mac. The typical student is artistically minded and has some artistic skills, especially drawing skills. Students are comfortable working independently on projects, working on a team, and working to help each other. Students who have not had Mac experience pick it up quickly based on past PC experience. Most students do go on to a 2-year or 4-year college to major in art, graphic design, or a related field. Possible career areas include graphic design, illustration, web design, photography, creative/art direction, video game design, advertising, marketing, and more.

In the Past 5 Years

  • Students have worked on projects for community groups, local companies, area high schools, and student organizations
  • Students have gone on to attend Ball State, Purdue Richmond, The Art Institute, and more
  • Students collaborated with other career programs to complete joint projects

  • Graphic Design I

    Graphic Design & Layout

    Graphic Design and Layout students plan, analyze, and create visual solutions to a variety of real world communication challenges. They combine imagery and visual text to effectively deliver messages for a variety of purposes, including advertising, displays, promotional materials, and instructional manuals. They are able to create strong page layout compositions using the foundation principles of design, color theory and typography.

    Students gain experience in Creative Suite 6 industry standard software, including Adobe Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. Students are expected to be comfortable working on a computer.

    Students completing this program may pursue 2 and 4-year postsecondary degrees related to graphic design or they may pursue employment opportunities in a variety of graphic communications.

    Industry Certification:

    Adobe Certification - Testing is required and fees apply. Qualifies for THD.


    How to prepare

    The following courses will help prepare students for the Graphic Design program, college, and a career in the graphic design field. These courses are not required but are recommended if available.

  • Graphic Design II

    Interactive Media

    Second-year students have the opportunity to work on projects for local customers, including t-shirts, brochures, marketing material, and more. Second-year students also work on completing their portfolios for presentation to postsecondary institutions and employers. Students completing this program may pursue 2 and 4-year postsecondary degrees related to graphic design or they may pursue employment opportunities in a variety of graphic communications careers.

    Adobe Certification - Testing is required and fees apply. Qualifies for THD.
