The Cosmetology program allows students to complete the 1500 hours required for licensing in Indiana. To be prepared, be on track for graduation and have room in your course schedule to attend the Cosmetology program for four hours each day for two years. Also be prepared to attend additional school days. Excellent high school attendance is required for acceptance and is expected throughout the two-year program. Students are required to make up all missed class time.

Course Instructor: LeeAnn Upchurch

A Typical Student in Cosmetology:

The typical student is one that enjoys creative activities and hands-on learning.  Students accepted into the career program have excellent high school attendance.  Students must attend an expanded school day and an additional 15 days of school to complete the hours required for state licensing.  Most students qualify for dual credits by passing the college placement tests in English and math.  Successful students have the patience and attention to detail to solve problems using the skills they have learned.  They can work independently or with other students.  They understand time management as it relates to salon operations and accruing the hours needed for licensure.  Students are able to stay on task without constant supervision.

In the Past 5 Years

  • Students have earned a pass rate of 100% on the state licensing exam
  • Students have gone on to attend Vincennes, Ivy Tech, and other schools
  • Students have gone to work in local salons and obtained licensing in neighboring states

  • Cosmetology I

    Cosmetology I

Students complete a 1500-hour apprenticeship program identified by the Indiana Cosmetology Licensing Board and are prepared to take the state licensing examination.  Students must attend Cosmetology I and II to accumulate the hours required, and students must be 18 years old to take the examination.  Specific classroom lessons and lab activities are required to meet the licensing requirements.  Students demonstrate proficiency in cutting hair, styling, giving perms, shampooing, coloring hair, providing skin and scalp care, conducting business management, providing good customer relations, and performing other skills required for licensing.  Due to State Board requirements, students must attend class four (4) hours per day and 20 hours per week.  Students must attend a two-week extended session to complete the required apprenticeship hours.  Upon completing this program and passing the State examination, students become licensed and are prepared to be employed in a salon.

Students also pursue 2 and 4-year postsecondary degrees in business, fashion design, or related fields and work their way through college.
